A Quick 3-Day Trip through Budapest

On a quick weekend trip, I visited family friends in Budapest, Hungary. Although it was short, they made sure to show me as much of Hungary as possible.

On my first day, we visited the Hungarian Parliament building while my friend gave us a self-guided tour, narrating own his comedic version of Hungarian history. We ate authentic strudels for lunch and wandered around the city. Next, we went to the famous Hungarian State Opera House, Magyar Állami Operaház. At the time I was living in Spain and, by chance, that night Don Carlo was playing. Afterwards, we went night ice-skating in City Park. The venue is beautifully lit and you can see the Vajdahunyad Castle. I froze to death in about 20 minutes, so we spent the rest of the night drinking hot cocoa and watching the ice skaters.

The next day we took a trip to the medieval town of Visegrád. It’s a small castle town north of Budapest on the bank of the Danube. A little on the dark side, we took a tour of the most infamous torture contraptions they used in the Citadel. But the views of the river were beautiful and I tried my hand at real archery. It’s so much harder than the bows they give you at the Renaissance Faire!

All in all, my trip was quick but exciting and I can’t wait to go back for more.
