The Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca
By far, my favorite adventure in Bolivia was visiting the Uros Floating Islands in the middle of Lake Titicaca! That's right, there is a community of indigenous Bolivians living on 70 man-made totora reed islands that FLOAT in the middle of the lake.
Traveling by boat to the center of the lake was a welcome change from driving through the dense cities of La Paz and San Cristobol. When we first stepped onto the island it sank a little and we weren't sure if we could walk. It only took a few minutes to get used to the reed floor and we were walking around like everyone else.
Even more amazing was our personal visit to one of the hostesses homes, also made of reeds. She has everything a land-bound house would have, including a TV! Hers is solar powered. We also went on a reed boat ride around the island in the traditional boats the Uros use to transport food around the Island and to Punos. This trip is a must-do if you are visiting Bolivia!
