The Importance of Multigenerational Homes

Multigenerational homes were once the norm across the globe, and even here in the United States, there were many homes with multiple generations living with one another. Those were the days when the phrase “it takes a village” meant that, quite often, the village was in the home.

Now, I know there’s a lot about the “good old days” that was far from good, but I firmly believe that multigenerational homes were absolutely a great part of those times. I live in a home with three generations, and I’ve found that it creates familial bonds that are become deep roots in the family tree.

Why I Believe in Multigenerational Homes

Although I would never say that any home that is not multigenerational is doing something wrong, I believe that it’s the right choice for my family. My parents live with my son and I, and I’ve found that it creates iron-clad bonds within the family.

Love and Support

Being born into a home with several generations in it gives children an immediate community that is always there to love and support them. At the same time, it teaches them to love and support others in return. Children know that Grandma, Grandpa, and whoever else is living in the home are always there for them, and they, in turn, feel that same connection and willingness to give for them.

Less Stress and More Joy

It’s also a great stress-reliever to know that you are always in a community that has your back, which makes it easier to live a life of joy. Of course, we all have our problems. Nothing can ever change that. But when you have that strong community, any curveballs that come your way seem less like nuclear explosions and more like minor inconveniences.

Love

I know I already talked about love, but it bears repeating. We all need love, and you’ll never find love as strong as you have with your family. Multigenerational homes have more than enough love to go around for everyone, and it’s always there. It creates an atmosphere that is so safe and feels like such a refuge from the craziness that lurks outside our doors.

Multigenerational Homes Work

Every family is different, but I’m a big believer in multigenerational homes if it’s something that families want to explore. I’ve watched my son, Eukiah grow and soak in all that love. I’ve seen him blossom into such a beautiful soul full of love, empathy, and a willingness and desire to help everyone around him. It starts at home, but it spreads to everyone he sees.

I’m so grateful to live in a home with multiple generations. I’m grateful for everything it gives them, me, and most importantly, my son.
