Being mixed doesn’t just affect how you look, it affects how you view the world. We embrace duality. We see it as our power. We feel a responsibility to bridge the gap. We provide empathy where we see it lacking. We encourage others to challenge their ideas in the way the world has challenged us. We reckon with the idea that our existence begs important questions. We are the definition of diversity, so we understand the necessity for it. We are misunderstood yet we seek to understand...
This duality and contradiction is something we, as mixed people, have had to reckon with unconsciously and on a daily basis, and it’s now being heightened as we watch the world go through the same thing. America is trying to figure out how to hold both pain and progress in one place. How to facilitate healing between the long held racial divide in this country. That’s something mixed race individuals have to do daily. In order for us to see ourselves as one whole being, we have had to tap into and bridge our own gap. So, to see this occurring outside of us has been both a relief and a burden. Both triggering and healing. We’ve been experiencing a racial war within our bodies’ DNA since birth.
