Volunteering at home is the new way to make a difference in the world as we deal with COVID-19. Eukiah and I are finding ways to donate, stay active, and volunteer from home during the pandemic. One of our favorite causes is World Vision’s 6K for Water Race. World Vision, the largest non-governmental provider of clean water in the world, is gearing up for its Global 6K for Water “virtual” event on May 16th. People from around the globe will join in the world’s largest virtual 6K walk for clean water. You can walk or run from virtually from your home or neighborhood for an extraordinary cause – bringing clean water to children and their families. With the global spread of COVID-19, access to clean water is more important than ever so people can wash their hands and protect themselves from this deadly virus, including healthcare workers working on the frontlines in rural clinics where resources are scarce. Every $50 registration provides lasting clean water for one person—child, parent, or healthcare worker-- so they can wash their hands to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Volunteering at Home to Help Families Around the World
In the areas where World Vision works, only half of the healthcare clinics have water and only 16% of healthcare facilities have basic handwashing facilities. World Vision is committed to reaching 800 rural health clinics that serve 7.2 million people by 2021, and we’ve already reached nearly 400 with clean water and hygiene. Every 10 seconds, World Vision provides clean water to one new person.
What’s the significance of 6k? Six kilometers is the average distance that people in the developing world walk for water, which is often contaminated with life-threatening diseases. Upon registering, participants will receive a race kit with everything they need, including a T-shirt, finisher medal, and unique race bib with the photo of a child receiving clean water from World Vision’s water projects. The cost of registration for adults is $50 – about the cost of your monthly water bill – which will provide clean water to one person in need. Youth registration (18 and under) is $25.
